1. Begriff: Zentral, zumeist in der Innenstadt gelegener Teilraum einer größeren Stadt, dessen Flächennutzung durch die räumliche Konzentration hochrangiger zentraler Einrichtungen des Handels- und Dienstleistungsgewerbes bestimmt ist ( Flächennutzungskonkurrenz). Mit zunehmender Größe der Stadt und des Hauptgeschäftszentrums entwickeln sich funktionalräumliche Gliederungen innerhalb der C. (Haupt- und Nebengeschäftstraßen, Bankenviertel, Büroviertel, Regierungsviertel u.a.). Die Spekulation auf die City-Expansion führt am Cityrand vielfach zur Bildung von Slums (Blight Areas).
